I attended South Newton Junior/Senior High School, whose mascot is still, to this day, the Rebels. There is a picture of a Rebel soldier waving a confederate flag painted on the wall of our gym, and confederate flags and bandannas fly everywhere at basketball and football games. When I was a senior in high school, we petitioned to have the mascot changed, but to no avail. We were told it was simply tradition, and it did not carry the same meaning as it did before.
