2011 email from a former resident. She wrote that, in the seventies, she was not welcome in that town so long as she has "anything more to do" with a black man. In the early nineties, she writes that "...the sheriff of Clinton County...refused medical treatment to a Latino male inmate in the county jail. He, the sheriff, was not going to waste the taxes of the good citizens of Clinton County on this man. The inmate became so ill that he nearly died and then the story hit the press." Finally, she references an anecdote in which a family member said, "the only worse thing to being a gay person in this community is to be a black one." Another longtime resident wrote about the racially motivated bullying of a black classmate while she was in school. She also wrote about the intolerance of interracial couples in Chazy in the early 70s, the mistreatment of a Latino inmate in county jail, and homophobia in the early twenty-first century.
