Braidwood city has a long mining history that has played strongly into its racial history. The town never specifically excluded blacks, but socially, they were forced out during strikes, and the National Guard was even called in to move them out. In periods where Braidwood has had a relatively high black population they usually lived all together in specific parts of town.
Now the town’s mining industry is no longer a main industry and this has changed the city’s demographics. The city has a black population that has geographic tendancies, but the city is no longer classified as a Sundown Town.
