Email from a longtime resident: "Notably absent from your list of CT towns though is neighboring Burlington, CT which was almost certainly an unofficial suntown town until the last maybe twenty years. I grew up there, there was one African American family, they lived near my grandparents and people were trying to run them out up into the mid-1980s. When I was in grade school, I got into a fight with their son over me being a pest (all 7 year olds are pests) and the principal asked us to keep it secret because he was concerned about retaliation against the family. My parents had black friends who would not come visit because the town had such a bad reputation regarding minorities. I don't know if there was an ordinance but there was definitely harassment and racial-profiling." Email from a longtime resident: "I do know factually now that there is no official town ordinance about being a sunset town and/or reflecting organized racism...My parents when I was growing up had a [black] friend...who lived in nearby Waterbury. He'd come over to hang out or play cards or whatever. He always made a habit of leaving before sunset and if he could not, he would spend the night on the couch. This was my later childhood. I recall conversations that the reason he needed to stay was because earlier years, whenever he would drive in or out of town, the police would stop and harass him, detain him for questioning, or pull him over and run his license and plates. Comments were made to the effect that being a black man in Burlington after dark, he couldn't be up to any good..."
