Fans overturned a school bus with the football team of Weequahic HS from Newark, 1968. “We knew it was all-white.” “Growing up in Newark, I wasn’t used to people calling me ‘nigger.'” This happened in the suburbs. The other team did it. “We were schooled not to retaliate.” Hillside never played at Newark. “They wouldn’t come.” “We ran through the building to get on the bus, and they started shaking the bus and the bus for the band and the cheerleaders.” “The police finally intervened after they rolled both buses over.” “They got us to the locker room.” “At that time, I became a real militant.”
