Marhsall has almost surely been sundown for decades. The town had no black residents in 1960 and 1970, and the county in which it lies, Searcy, only had 3 black households in 2000. The town is probably not a sundown town today, although few African Americans live in Marshall.
A January 25, 2011 FoxNews.com reported that the town’s mayor flew the Confederate flag in observance of Robert E. Lee’s birthday. The city council in Marshall responded to outraged citizens by passing an ordinance requiring that the Confederate flag not be flown on city property. Further, an emergency meeting was held in order to make sure it would not happen again.
