I have heard some locals here in Pickens County, SC tell stories of signs and threats in Rosman in the 1950s and possibly the 1960s.
The person who told me the story is a white man in his late 50’s from Greenville, SC. As best as I remember it was a “friend of a friend” type story, involving a black man traveling with a white friend (or employer?), passing through, who was verbally warned at a restaurant or a gas station.
I’m not sure if towns under 1000 people count for your purposes. I haven’t been able to put the book down since I started it.
