Comments

“There was a sign at the east end of town that read,
‘Nigger. Don’t let the sun set on you here.’ Whether it
reflected the views of the people of Powell was
questionable, but Sarah [a black woman from Georgia]
came in on the train and didn’t see it. Housing was
non-existent and the only place she could find to rent
was a little red, one-room house on the edge of town.
It was known as the ‘pest house’ because people who
contracted smallpox were isolated there until they
recovered or died; afterward, it would be fumigated
and made ready for the next time.”
